Check Log Files? How? Where?

If you run into a problem with your windows home server one of the first steps in the trouble shooting process should be a check of the log files. Or, if you post a question asking for help with a problem someone may ask you to provide the log files. So, where do you find these log files and how do you check them?

What you will need

What to Do

  1. Gain access to your server desktop either by RDP connection or via the Advanced Admin Console. Using My Computer, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Logs\. This directory is also accessable by using the shortcut %qlogs%. Sort the logs by date/time and see if you can identify a log that was created at about the time the problem occurred. Using the information in the log you may be able to determine what is causing the problem. If you post a question about the problem on the forum, include the log as an attachment to the post rather than including it within the post.
  2. Download and install the Windows Home Server Toolkit 1.1. Using the Event Viewer in the toolkit you may be able to identify an event which is occurring that will give some insight into the problem. If you don't have the WHS Toolkit installed (you should) on the server go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
