Unable To Create A Volume

Sometimes when adding a drive to the pool you'll get the following error: "Add Drive Wizard Fails: Unable to create a volume".

Advanced Admin Console:

  1. Open you console and select the Advanced Admin Console
  2. Select the Command Prompt shortcut.
  3. Type mountvol /e to turn on the Automount option for new disks.
  4. Run the New Partition wizard. Format a new volume that does not have a drive leter.
  5. At the command prompt, type mountvol /n to turn off the Automount option.

Remote Desktop:

  1. Connect to your WHS with remote desktop connection.
  2. Select Start and then Command Prompt (or Run and type in: cmd.exe)
  3. Type mountvol /e to turn on the Automount option for new disks.
  4. Run the New Partition wizard. Format a new volume that does not have a drive leter.
  5. At the command prompt, type mountvol /n to turn off the Automount option.


Or format the disk in the disk Management MMC:

Advanced Admin Console:

  1. Open your console and select the AAC Add-In.
  2. Select Administrative Tools and then Computer Management
  3. Select Disk Management
  4. Create a drive letter and format that disk.
  5. Remove that drive letter and re-run the wizard again.

Remote Desktop:

  1. Connect to your WHS with remote desktop connection.
  2. Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools and then Computer Management
  3. Select Disk Management
  4. Create a drive letter and format that disk.
  5. Remove that drive letter and re-run the wizard again.

Aditional Info

I had to deal with this a while ago in the BETA, and if I remember correctly, this was the way I solved this issue. The topic that J1mbo started reminded me to add this to the FAQ.

He solved it another way, but basicly it's the same solution.
